The Chimbote Foundation transforms donor gifts into care for the poorest of the poor in Chimbote’s desert barrios.
It is estimated that 80% of the people in Chimbote, Peru, live in poverty. In the US, we have trouble even comprehending such a situation. But for decades, the presence of the Chimbote Mission’s Center for Social Works (COS) has given hope to even the poorest of the poor. And while COS staff members have been the hands and feet of Christ in the barrios, they readily explain that they could not do this work without the generous donors who faithfully support the Chimbote Foundation.
One donor we spoke to recently, who wishes to remain anonymous, said he knew supporting the Mission’s work could change lives.
“I realized that I could help children and young people in Chimbote, at the beginning of their lives, to give them some type of chance in life.”
As with many supporters, this donor follows social media for news about the Missions, maternity hospital, clinic, home visit program, Dignified Housing program. and other services.
“It’s clear that the Chimbote mission is doing God’s work.”
Deflecting any praise for his significant gifts, he says, “The people who are on the front lines, they are the heroes working to alleviate suffering in Chimbote.”
We agree; they are heroes. But our donors certainly are, too.
“Every single contribution, no matter how small, is put to excellent use for the most vulnerable individuals,” says Zoraida Mezones Sanchez, a longtime home visit nurse who sees the most pressing needs and what is accomplished as a result of the Mission’s supporters.
Each and every donor to the Chimbote Foundation is making hope bloom in the desert.
